Brad Pitt, who only just last summer went on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert to talk about how amazing his sobriety journey has been, is back “off the wagon” (his words!) and “on the wine” (our words), so long as he doesn’t go overboard. In a new conversation with Esquire ahead of his David Ayer–directed dog movie Heart of the Beast, Pitt offers interviewer Ryan D’Agostino some wine. That prompted the two to discuss why the actor, who has spent the past several years getting sober after alcohol and substance abuse were at the heart of an alleged explosive incident between him and ex-wife Angelina Jolie, has wine on offer. Pitt explains he’s off the wagon but in “a more restrained manner,” adding that he “got overconfident a couple times, went, Yep, nope, not good for me. Not in big quantities.”
What Pitt means by “not in big quantities” is he’s allowed to have more than one glass but not so many that he’s hungover in the morning because Pitt has somewhat recently become a morning person. “I have to be professional about it,” he clarifies. “Professionalism” did not seem to be the core issue at the heart of Pitt’s sobriety, but perhaps that is just him putting it politely.
The rest of the interview, like many interviews with Pitt, is committed to proving what a normal guy he is: He watches TV, he watches sports, he has dogs, he eats cheese. Yes, he is one of the most famous people of all time, and yes, he’s had a very public personal life for many years, but at the end of the day, he loves to sit in a chair and eat salami just like the rest of us. The bulk of Pitt’s press for the past several years has emphasized his relative chillness in the face of a scandal that was decidedly unchill. If Pitt wants to start drinking again, he’s gonna be sure it aligns with his chillness, even if it’s the main thing that led to his lack of chill in the first place.
