Construction in one of Dallas’ best-known entertainment districts is forcing out a longtime restaurant. After nearly a decade in business, Zatar Lebanese Tapas & Bar at 2825 Commerce St. in Deep Ellum plans to close by the end of August. The Mediterranean eatery announced the news on social media on Aug. 7 but did not specify an exact final day.
“This wasn’t an easy decision. Over the last two years, we’ve fought through one challenge after another. We poured everything we had into keeping our doors open because we truly believed things would turn around. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, the ongoing construction and other challenges have made it impossible for us to continue,” Zatar’s statement read.
“To everyone who walked through our doors, shared a meal with family and friends, celebrated special occasions, or simply made Zatar part of your life—thank you. Your support, loyalty, and kindness have meant more to us than words can express.”
Zatar opened its doors in Deep Ellum in December 2016, offering a modern twist on traditional Lebanese bites, from hummus and baba ghannoush to its chicken shawarma loaded fries and sloppy shawarma barbecue sandwiches.
Construction on the city’s Commerce Street project has been underway since fall 2024. Owner Sam Fawal, who bought the restaurant in 2019, told CultureMap Dallas that the project’s delay until January 2027 was a “big part in the decision” to close Zatar.
Zatar is asking fans to come by to dine, drink and smoke hookah one last time to celebrate.
“Zatar has been so much more than a restaurant—it has been a place where friendships were made, birthdays were celebrated, and memories were created over great food, drinks, and hookah,” the restaurant wrote.
