These volunteered in my garden I'm guessing from the compost. Looks nice right? This tastes like poison. It's the texture of a cantaloupe and the flavor of… a bitter pumpkin??? Not all gardening experiments pan out. Luckily I have other melons that taste good!!

I had a similar experience with a compost melon. It looked great but tasted like nothing.

Hybrid cucurbits can sometimes be poisonous. Hence the bitter taste. ALWAYS be careful eating them.

It looks overripe. Now, if it tasted or smelled like rot or booze, that’s all it is. However, cucurbits hybridize quite readily, and they can hybridize with uncultivated wild plants nearby.
If it tasted very bitter, this is more likely what happened. If any squash, melon, cucumber, etc. tastes very bitter, spit it out and compost it. Cucurbitacins are a bitter, poisonous compound that cultivated cucurbits have bred down to safe levels. Unsafe levels of the compound due to hybridization can cause toxic squash syndrome if consumed. Just a taste isn’t going to hurt you, just spit it out if it tastes very bitter. I would check one more properly ripe fruit and if it is still bitter, compost the whole plant.
Last year was my first year trying to grow cantaloupe. This was all of mine last year. Looked and smelled amazing. Tasted disgusting.
