Probably green food algae or w/e left over from cleaning the fish. You could still eat it assuming there’s no smells etc and the can was undamaged etc.
Common-Grab-8876

Fecal matter. Any respectable brand will keep sardines in a holding tank until the digestive system is empty.

OP is never going to eat sardines again lol. But in all honesty I swear I’ve seen the digestive tract full in a can before. So offputting. Chowed the fish down with some hot sauce and never had any effect on me, but I hope I never come across it again.
You should contact the brand with this photo

Luckily for you you opened the tin in the daytime. Imagine if you did this at night 😳
ExcitableSarcasm
I can’t believe a comment section on r/CannedSardines isn’t just sycophantically chanting “down the hatch” when someone asks about something that looks questionable in a can of fish.
There is hope.
SanguineBrain
Animals eat entire fish hole.
I this case it’s been pasteurized via canning, so at least the fish poop is ~~clean~~ free of pathogens.

Maybe it’s something that got added during the canning process; a preservative? machine gunk?, somebody’s finger? In any case, ew.
