A NEW French wine bar has opened its doors on Edinburgh’s waterfront, bringing dining and seafood from France to the city’s coast.
Chez Bernard, located at 38 Shore, is run by couple Jonathan Heredia and Isla Mosquera and is Leith’s first French wine bar, marking a continental addition to an area that is fast becoming one of the city’s go-tos for food.
Named in honour of Jonathan’s grandfather Bernard, the bar offers a menu of classic French sharing plates, fresh oysters, salmon and dressed crab alongside an extensive wine list.
Jonathan spent his childhood summers near the Atlantic coast of France, inspiring the concept of traditional long lunches at the new venue.
Jonathan Heredia and Isla Mosquera have 15 years of combined hospitality experience.
The owners, who have 15 years of combined experience in the hospitality industry, chose the location just off Bernard Street as a nod to the bar’s namesake.
The establishment is open seven days a week from 12pm until late, welcoming both families and children for afternoon grazing and evening meals.
Diners can expect a selection of artisanal French cheeses and charcuterie, as well as an assortment of hot dishes and additional sharing plates.
The wine experts have curated a drinks list designed to complement the bistro’s seafood offerings and sharing platters.
The menu caters to all occasions, providing options for solo diners looking for a quick bite or groups wanting food to share.
Jonathan explained: “Chez Bernard is deeply personal for us.
“It’s a tribute to my grandfather and to the simple moments that shaped my love for food, wine, and the table.
“I spent many summers with my grandfather, which is where my love for a long, leisurely lunch began.
“When this beautiful space became available just off Bernard Street, it felt like absolute fate for both of us.
“This is our way of keeping his memory alive, and Isla and I want to bring a little of that continental warmth to The Shore.
“We want this to be a welcoming place to share good food, enjoy wine, and spend time around the table with the people you love.”
