If you love Mamma MIa and fancy feeling like you’re on holiday in sunnier climes, when, in reality, you’re slap bang in the middle of town, a brunch themed around the much loved movie has been confirmed at an idyllic roof terrace in Newcastle. And the event, hosted by famous drinks brand Fentimans, promises food, drinks and music before a screening of the film.
It is making us feel very old to even write about the fact that it’s been nearly 20 years since the first Mamma Mia movie was released in cinemas; nearly a decade on from the stage musical of the same name, featuring many ABBA anthems, made its debut in the West End. Just like the theatre show, the film was a big box office hit, thanks in no small part, to its amazing soundtrack and the star turns from its cast including Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Julie Walters.
The film spawned sequel Here We Go Again in 2018 and, if you love the tunes from either of them and are up for feeling like you’re on a Greek island for a few hours, Roof Thirty Nine on top of Fenwick in Newcastle city centre, will be the location for the exclusive Mamma Mia brunch on Bank Holiday Sunday, August 30.

On a red hot day, Roof Thirty Nine is one of the best suntraps in town, so keep your fingers crossed that we get another Mediterranean style heatwave next weekend for the 12-2pm event. Tickets are on sale now, priced at £30 per person, including a cocktail, large plate and side, with a live DJ adding to the atmosphere throughout the afternoon, giving guests the opportunity to sing along to their favourite Mamma Mia tracks before the screening at nearby Screen on the Green in Old Eldon Square.
Guests are required to pre-order their meals upon booking, with a variety of dishes from Fenwick’s own Fuego restaurant to enjoy. Diners can pick from a vibrant selection of large plates including the Fuego Burger with manchego, basque sauce, rocket and patatas bravas, Coal-Roasted Bream with Sicilian salad and Salmoriglio dressing, Aubergine Siniya with grilled aubergine, tahini sauce, lemon yogurt, pine nuts and crispy onions, and Chicken Souvlaki and Halloumi Skewers with fattoush salad, harissa and garlic labneh.
A variety of small plates will also be available to select including Patatas Bravas with roasted garlic aioli and Fuego seasoning, Heirloom Tomato and Samphire and Ibores Salads.
Guests will receive a cocktail on arrival and can pick from an expertly crafted cocktail list to enjoy throughout. Signature cocktails include the Summer Sunset which combines tequila, limoncello and Fentimans Victorian Lemonade, the Dirty G&T, served with Hepple Gin, Noilly Prat and Fentimans Indian Tonic Water, and the Frozen Pomegranate Mule, blending Hepple vodka, pomegranate syrup, lime juice and Fentimans Ginger Beer.
