Bradenton-based A. Shadow Designs marks five years of creating custom apparel, engraved gifts and branded products for local customers and businesses.

What began with a single idea at a dining room table has grown into a successful Bradenton-area business serving individuals, organizations, events and companies throughout the Suncoast.

A. Shadow Designs is celebrating its fifth anniversary, a milestone that owner Tori Lee Swenson admits is still difficult to believe.

“I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that this business started five years ago at my dining room table,” Lee shared in an anniversary message. “Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. My family and I are so appreciative of each and every one of you.”

The company’s story is one familiar to many determined small-business owners: an idea, a modest investment, a willingness to learn and countless hours of work.

Tori was six months postpartum and a stay-at-home mother when she told her significant other, Ryan, that she wanted to purchase a Cricut machine and try earning money from home. Ryan asked her to prepare a business plan, and Lee responded by putting one together that same night.

That simple challenge helped launch what would become A. Shadow Designs.

Lee remembers creating her first shirt for one of Ryan’s cousins. Only a few months later, demand had grown enough for her to finance her first direct-to-garment printer. The business soon outgrew the front room of the family’s home.

A friend eventually helped her locate two finished sheds that could be transported and repurposed as workspaces. Five years later, the operation has grown to include four machines, three heat presses and two shops—all built around what Lee describes as one dream.

Helping Customers Turn Ideas Into Reality

A. Shadow Designs specializes in custom apparel, personalized merchandise and precision engraving.

The company produces full-color designs on cotton and polyester shirts, sweatshirts and other apparel. Customers can also order custom polo shirts, branded T-shirts, hoodies, aprons, tote bags, hats, koozies and promotional items.

For local businesses, these products offer an opportunity to strengthen brand recognition while giving employees a polished and consistent appearance. Custom merchandise can also be used for company giveaways, community events, retail sales, customer appreciation gifts and fundraising campaigns.

A. Shadow Designs also provides engraving on a wide variety of materials, including:

Glass
Tumblers
Keychains
Slate coasters
Wood
Acrylic
Leather

Engraved merchandise can be personalized for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, corporate gifts, employee recognition programs and other special occasions.

The company says it uses modern printing equipment to produce colorful, detailed and durable designs while working closely with customers from the initial concept through the finished product. That same local production tradition has deep roots on the Suncoast, as reflected in the story of a second-generation Sarasota printing business.

Custom Products With a Personal Touch

One of the qualities that distinguishes A. Shadow Designs is the personal attention Tori gives to each project.

Customers do not necessarily need to arrive with a finished design. They can bring a logo, a phrase, a rough idea or an example of what they would like, and the business can help develop a product that fits their needs.

That personalized approach is especially valuable for small businesses, restaurants, fishing charters, sports teams, nonprofit organizations and community groups that may not have an in-house designer or marketing department.

Recent projects promoted by A. Shadow Designs have included custom leather and embroidered patch hats, hand-produced koozies, business apparel and locally themed shirts. The business has also worked with community organizations on fundraising merchandise and event apparel.

Tori says every project receives attention regardless of the order’s size. That means an individual ordering a personalized gift can expect the same level of care as a business placing an order for staff apparel or promotional merchandise.

Supporting Fundraisers and the Suncoast Community

A. Shadow Designs’ work extends beyond commercial printing and personalized gifts.

The company frequently collaborates with local businesses, nonprofit organizations and community events. Its website highlights fundraising apparel and team merchandise as important parts of the business.

A recent example involved Dog Days at Flamingo Bay, where specially designed shirts helped support Wander4Paws. A portion of the proceeds from each shirt was directed back to the animal organization.

These collaborations demonstrate how custom merchandise can do more than advertise an event. A well-designed shirt or promotional item can raise money, bring participants together and continue spreading awareness long after an event is over.

For Tori, those community relationships have been an important part of the company’s first five years.

Five Years of Learning and Growth

She is candid about the fact that building A. Shadow Designs has involved challenges, mistakes and plenty of learning curves.

“There have been so many ups and downs and learning curves, but it’s been one hell of a ride so far,” she wrote while reflecting on the anniversary.

Her anniversary message also invited longtime customers to share photographs of products the company created during its early days—both the polished projects and the ones that show how far the business has come.

That willingness to acknowledge the learning process is part of what makes the company’s story relatable. A. Shadow Designs did not begin with a large production facility or a fleet of equipment. It began with a new mother, a business plan, a Cricut machine and a belief that she could build something from home.

Five years later, the company is creating apparel and engraved merchandise for customers across the Bradenton and Sarasota area while continuing to expand its products and capabilities.

Why Shopping Small Matters

Small businesses such as A. Shadow Designs contribute something unique to the Suncoast economy. As the Suncoast Post has explored in its coverage of Small Business Month and the region’s entrepreneurs, locally owned companies are an important part of the community.

Orders remain in the community, customers receive direct service from the people creating their products, and local businesses can collaborate with someone who understands the area and its customers.

A locally produced shirt, hat or engraved gift also comes with a story—one that involves a family, a dream and a business owner who remembers exactly where it all began.

As A. Shadow Designs celebrates five years, Tori’s message to customers remains centered on gratitude.

“Thank you for believing in us and shopping small,” she wrote.

For a business that began at a Bradenton dining room table, five years represents much more than an anniversary. It is proof of what determination, community support and one good idea can become.
