    Your sympathy is misplaced. This hornworm deserves to die. Cycle of life, etc. Plus, just last week he was trying his best to kill my tomato plants, here in Texas. Then he obviously hopped in his Learjet and flew to Missouri to attack yours. Who knows what unsuspecting grower would have been next if the Parasitic Wasp Patrol had not tracked him down.

    Really the wasps don’t help as much as you make it seem. They don’t go after the worms until they are near full sized already meaning they have eaten a large chunk of any plant they are on. Normal predators like birds and other wasps eat them as soon as they find them.

    Caterpillars are cute. These photos make me so uncomfortable. I’d rather just relocate the hornworms.

    Does the hornworm have a nervous system? Can it feel those eggs in a painful way? I’m asking out of plain curiosity not solidarity cause while it’s a cute looking slug thing it’s also an enemy and i support them being decimated

    Don’t feel bad. I’ve had some years that the parasitoid Brachonid Wasps guarded mine like this too. It’s way better than when the hornworm destroys my plants.

    I counted 5 on my lone Datura plant back on about August 15th. This is a picture of one of them, munching away! I had been seeing them there for a couple of weeks, eating the plant fairly aggressively. Finally at about 75% of the leaves eaten, they all disappeared. I’m hoping to see them again in a couple of weeks as Hawk Moths! Who then come and feast on the nectar of the Datura flower!
