When an exterior sign is removed from the front of a restaurant, there’s usually cause for concern.
And the sign is gone from the exterior of Georges French Bistro, 4816 E. Central.
But as any Wichitan who’s been to Georges probably assumes, the popular restaurant — the first in Wichita history to be named a James Beard semifinalist — is in no danger of closing.
I contacted Georges’ owner and namesake, George Youssef, to find out what was happening with the restaurant’s sign.
He confirmed that there’s no need to panic. Kansas wind has been tough on the sign during the years it’s greeted customers to the restaurant, and it needed some repairs.
“It’s always nice to keep the place pristine,” he said. “It’s a very busy place.”
The sign, which features gold trim and red-block lettering on a black background, likely won’t be reinstalled for about a month, he said.
Youssef opened Georges French Bistro in 2015 and gave it a major remodel in 2017, turning it into a replica of a typical Parisian bistro. The menu offers simple French bistro-style dishes like escargot, mussels, steak frites, crepes and creme brulee.
Over the years, Youssef has expanded the restaurant several times, taking over spaces in the strip center next to Georges as they become available. In 2024, he added a 3,000-square-foot bakery to the west end of his restaurant so that he could produce French bread and pastries for the restaurant.

In 2025, Georges was one of 20 semifinalists nationwide in the category of Outstanding Restaurant, listed alongside restaurants from New York City, San Francisco, Chicago and Miami. Though it did not ultimately win the prize, Youssef said he was honored that his restaurant was recognized.
Youssef also owns Chester’s Chophouse & Wine Bar, 1550 N. Webb. He bought the fine-dining restaurant from founder Wink Hartman Sr. and his business partners in 2019.
