I’ve always painted gold trims but this is a lot, is there a way to get this look with just simple frosting that’s been mixed? Would luster dust do the trick mixed into the frosting batch? I have pearl additive gel but it’s never really looked like what I thought it would when I added it.

Luster dust mixed in would be a gamble, but brushing on pearl dust thinned with vodka or lemon extract after piping always looks more reliable.
There are some videos on TikTok, YouTube, etc that show how to make gold royal icing and pipe it. I have not tried it, so I have no idea if they actually work and how they turn out, however.
