Found my Italian long hot peppers like this on the plant. There was also one last week with similar marks. There were no bugs or eggs inside and the peppers seemed still edible. I have cowhorns and several other pepper plants right next to these that have not been affected. I've been growing peppers for years and have never seen this before so if anyone knows what this is I would love an answer!

I get damage that looks like that from fruit worms (army worms, etc.) They appear to be the same kind of worms that attack my tomatoes. Sometimes the worm stays inside, but not always. They typically become a problem for me late in the season. NE Texas.

Earwigs leave damage like this on my peppers.
Slugs in mine. I just cut around the holes. Haven’t died yet.
I wouldn’t eat them if I were you.

I’ve had that happen rarely to my sweet peppers but I don’t think I’ve had it happen to any of the hot varieties. I’m kind of surprised.
Check your plants at night. They like to hide in the dirt all day then come out to chomp when the sun goes down
