I fall somewhere between being frugal and being a sardine snob. Wild Planet in olive oil, being sort of my low end. But I know there are people on this list who are on a tighter budget than I am so when I was in a Dollar Tree the other day and saw sardines and herring fillets for $1.50 I grabbed a tin of each. I just tried the sardines and to be honest they weren’t that bad. They just didn’t have a lot of flavor, which is probably what endears this brand to a lot of people, and the sardines themselves were kind of broken up but the hot sauce definitely made them palatable. I would drop off a bunch of these at a canned food drive and know people would probably enjoy them.

I’ve made fish stock and used the others in stir fry and salads. The cheaper cans can absolutely make some great tasting meals and appetizers.
My 1 year old and I love the beach cliff herring. Cheap, tasty, and decent quality. Not as high quality as Brunswick or KO, but under 1/2 the price
I slap those cheap herring filets between toasted rye bread with some dijon mustard, pickled red onions, and a bit of shredded lettuce for a great tasting sandwich.
I’m more of a fan of the Beach Cliff herring than the COHS sardines, for sure. As you said, not a ton of flavor in the dines. The herring, if put on toasted seeded (or marbled) rye bread with some pickled beets and horseradish cream, is pretty tasty.
I have a tin of the CotS in Louisiana hot sauce in my pantry. Maybe I’ll grab them for lunch.
I like the CotS dines in hot sauce. Very decent budget option.
The kipper snack is definitely worth the low cost of admission.
