Authentic White with Oysters

Cult German wine brand Blue Nun is to return to the UK, having bagged a listing with Ocado.

Bottles of Blue Nun Authentic White and Blue Nun Riesling have landed in the UK, carrying an abv of 10% and 9% respectively.

Authentic White is listed with Ocado (rsp: £7.50/75cl), while both wines are also available via Drink Supermarket.

They retain the brand’s blue bottle but boast a “cleaner, more contemporary identity to appeal to modern wine drinkers”.

First produced in 1921, Blue Nun has sold more than one billion bottles worldwide and is available in 64 countries, making it the bestselling German wine brand of all time.

In its 1970s heyday, the brand sold around 3.5 million bottles a year in the UK. However, its popularity waned in the 1980s as consumer tastes shifted away from sweet, easy-drinking white wines.

The brand was acquired by German family-run winery FW Langguth Erben in the 1990s, which updated the label and introduced new cuvées, but retail distribution in the UK remained limited.

However, following Les Grands Chais de France’s 2024 acquisition of FW Langguth Erben, the brand has now been relaunched to tap growing demand for “approachable, fruit-forward wines, lower-alcohol styles and more relaxed drinking occasions”.

Blue Nun Authentic White offers “a fresh, easy-drinking style with aromas of apple, peach and citrus”. Authentic Riesling is made from grapes grown in Germany’s Rheinhessen region and promises “lively acidity and subtle sweetness”.

In keeping with Blue Nun advertising campaigns of the 1970s and 80s, both wines are designed to be paired with food.

Authentic White is billed as “a versatile partner for seafood, grilled chicken, Asian cuisine and dishes with spice, sweetness or umami”. Authentic Riesling, meanwhile, is said to be “an excellent match for seafood, sushi, lightly spiced dishes and aromatic cuisines”.

“Blue Nun is one of the great success stories in the wine industry because it introduced millions of people around the world to German wine,” said Henry Colyer, UK marketing manager at GCF. “At GCF, we share the belief that wine should be welcoming, enjoyable and easy to discover. We’re proud to be bringing Blue Nun back to UK consumers and to introduce a new generation of drinkers to this iconic brand.”
