I was given a bunch of old jars for free, and I just wanted a double check that these would be okay for pressure canning? The Bernardin one I think is fine but the weird jar shape has me suspicious. The others I don't recognize the brands and the shapes are a little more square and unusual than the newer jars.

The brands are: Douglas, Canadian Mason, Dominion, and Consumer.

I’m also in Canada and have received a few of these vintage jars– I’ve used that same 500ml square-ish mason jar and the 1L consumers mason jar for water bath canning a few times now and haven’t had any issues! Just inspect it for cracks/chips

Is the Canadian Mason jar bilingual? (serious question)

These are all legit jars. I still have plenty of them and use them regularly in pressure canning without any problem. I don’t see a higher breaking rate with those older jars either.

And yes, some are old enough to be bilingual!

I have sooo many of these old jars still in rotation. These are what my mom had, and I now have all of hers (plus all of her crown sealers).

One year I was canning 1qt jars of tomato sauce, and when pulling out jars I was easily able to find 7 different brands or designs, so I made sure I used one of each for that batch, just for the fun of it.

I’ve now got way more new jars than old, but up until last year I would say these old jars out numbered my new ones, at least for regular mouth 1L/qts!

I have a tonne of them, particularly the consumer ones and I’ve never had a problem.
