PVOIL, FatHopes Energy partner to collect used cooking oil for sustainable aviation fuel production

Petrovietnam’s subsidiary PVOIL and FatHopes Energy have entered into a strategic partnership to build a network for collecting used cooking oil in Vietnam, providing feedstock for the production of sustainable aviation fuel and other advanced biofuels.

The program will initially be rolled out in Ho Chi Minh City before gradually expanding to other localities across Vietnam.

Used cooking oil will be collected from restaurants, industrial kitchens, food and seafood processing facilities, households and other suitable sources. It is one of the feedstocks that can be used to produce sustainable aviation fuel.

When collected and managed properly, the oil can be returned to the production chain rather than becoming waste or being improperly disposed of, helping promote a circular economy.

PVOIL currently operates about 1,050 petrol stations, along with a nationwide network of storage facilities, transportation and logistics infrastructure.

PVOIL Trans, a PVOIL subsidiary, will be responsible for collecting the oil and coordinating with businesses, communities and other local stakeholders to roll out and gradually expand the network.

Depending on the availability of domestic supply, PVOIL aims to build a large-scale used cooking oil collection network in Vietnam.

Sustainable aviation fuel is produced from feedstocks that meet sustainability criteria, including used cooking oil, waste fats and oils, and certain other waste materials and by-products.

Compared with conventional fossil-based aviation fuel, sustainable aviation fuel has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions over the fuel’s lifecycle and is considered one of the key solutions in the aviation industry’s emissions-reduction efforts.

FatHopes Energy is a Malaysian company involved in the collection and development of waste-based feedstock supply chains for sustainable fuel production. The company will provide technology, operational expertise and collection methods that have been deployed across Southeast Asia.
