My very first attempt at growing dry beans! I managed to get this great harvest from 20 plants grown in the ground through a super hot climate.
The pods turned completely brown and brittle on the vine, and now they are freshly shelled and ready to go. I’m skipping long-term storage and cooking them up tonight into a rich red bean soup with smoked turkey neck and beef. Incredibly satisfying first harvest!

Started growing beans for drying this year. So many plants, then I see what a bag of dried beans costs at the store and think of the size of the fields and amount of infrastructure that went into it.
Still growing beans for drying, but figuring out how to use otherwise unused space for it while deterring rabbits.
I grew pinto beans and scarlet runners. I figured whatever beans I got were bonus on top of the nitrogen fixing in the soil for all my other plants.
I grow beans that I can’t get in store easily for when I want to mix things up. Yes, the amount of space/plants you need for a decent harvest is very high lol
Better than me ..I grew six black beans…I was influenced by Michael Simon and his jar of beans had no idea I had to grow like a field but if I had that kind of room I probably wouldn’t pick beans 😅
Nice! I have just 4 plants of a sort of blue-ish bean given to me by a friend. I am already up to 1/2 pound of beans, with many more pods already drying or still growing. If I am lucky I may reach 2 pounds when all is said and done, but it was so much fun to watch them grow and take over a 12ft bamboo tower and hang onto my disused phone line 😃

So, I grow the Beefy Resilient GREX bred by Carole Deppe and I found that this year’s amount of pods fully full of beans developing seems greater. I really do wonder if it’s because of the black Tepary bean influence that needs hot dry weather to set the pods.
Do you have any pictures of the plants to show the size of plant/space for this yield?
I tried some beans this year but wasn’t very successful. Adjusting and will try again next year!
