  1. That coaster made me twitch uncontrollably, LOL, but I get it.
What I need are some notes, though! That’s a hell of a bottle.

  2. Walked into one of my favorite client restaurants today for a tasting, was told the sommelier was running a bit late with a prior appointment and some marketing stuff.

I see him run outside to take a video with a bottle, a glass, and a coravin in his hands and think nothing of it. A few minutes later he comes back in and hands me a small pour of what he had opened, I ask what it is and he turns the bottle around to reveal… 93 Margaux! Beyond the fact that that happens to be my birth year, I had a moment of real appreciation for my position in the industry and the opportunities of course to taste cool wines, spirits, and sake, but more so for the connections with folks with real passion, talent, and resolve out there. It was an awesome end to a long but rewarding day.

Obviously I didn’t take any formal notes, but the wine certainly left a meaningful impression on me. The nose was initially completely dominated by floral tones, think potpourri, vivid violet, and a light perfumed touch. I hadn’t necessarily expected it, but it was pretty captivating. With some air, the unexpected floral notes blew off to reveal great purity of fruit, some generous spice, and racy green herbaceous tones (not underripe or overtly pyrazine, but fleshy and vegetal, very positive connotation).

Considering 93 wasn’t a stellar vintage, the palate was a bit thin and lacking the stuffing to back up the otherwise compelling nose. All in all, it was a reminder of how lovely old-school Bordeaux is – low alcohol, loaded with flavor, and full of charm.
