French Wine Production Lowest In Last 30 Years

Every November, the French new wine “Beaujolais Nouveau,” which wine lovers around the world wait for, is expected to become even more valuable this year. This is because the heat wave and drought that hit Europe this summer have significantly reduced grape yields in major French wine regions, including Beaujolais.

According to Reuters on the 7th (local time), the French Ministry of Agriculture predicted that wine production will be only 33.9 million hectares (100 liters) this year. It is 6% less than last year and 17% less than the average of the last five years, one of the lowest levels in the last 30 years.

In particular, production in Burgundy and Beaujolais is expected to fall by about a third from last year.

Beaujolais Nouveau is a new wine made from gametal grapes harvested in the Beaujolais region of France that year and served immediately after short ripening. It is famous for being released simultaneously around the world on the third Thursday of November every year. This year, November 19 is the release date.

The biggest reasons for driving down French wine production this year are summer heat waves and droughts. The grape crop was relatively good until spring, but the intense heat in the summer caused stress on the vine and the grapes did not grow properly.

As grapes ripen faster due to the heat wave, the harvest period has also been earlier than usual.

In addition, the area of grape cultivation in France itself is also decreasing. As more farmers close their vineyards or switch to other uses in response to reduced wine consumption, the area of grape cultivation this year decreased by 2.5% from last year.
