Clean the vents in the lid with a putty knife
This is a back burn starting. Here’s how I fixed my recteq (different model) when this happened, without having to empty the 40lb hopper.
1. Shut grill off and unplug power
2. I went down to the wiring underneath and unplugged the spade clips one by one, then powered it on until I found the wire that was the igniter (but identifying which wires were the augur motor and the fan)
3. I then opened up my grill and repeatedly allowed the augur to run in startup mode (turn grill on and off it needed)
4. That allowed me to augur through a bunch of pellets until I was confident all of the smoldering pellets had been removed without the igniter and fan heating everything up
5. After all done, and grill is cleaned up, reconnect everything
I was super pleased with this method when I figured it out, good luck!

Possibly pellet dust that settles in the bottom of the feeder/ auger from broken up pellets?
See if you can return it. I also have a bullseye and it always smokes from the pellet hopper. It’s my 3rd pellet grill and by far the worst I’ve owned.
Check your fan to make sure the fan is actually turning on
