Family-run The Vegan Yacht shut its South Austin storefront Aug. 2 after eight years at 2000 Southern Oaks Drive, Austin. The business will open a new food trailer at the Springdale Food Park in East Austin, co-owner Mike Wood told Community Impact. He expects to open in mid- to late October.
Why the move
Owners Mike and Danielle Wood said in a June Instagram post that the climbing costs of running a physical storefront and sourcing supplies left the trailer format as the only way to keep the business afloat long-term.
The switch brings the vegan comfort-food business back to how it launched in 2010. This time it’s an entirely new trailer, Wood said, where he and his wife will run the business with their two kids.
What’s on the menu
The fully vegan menu is built with allergies in mind, with many items labeled nut-free, soy-free or gluten-free, per the website.
Burritos and bowls make up the core of the menu, centered on tempeh and seasoned soy curls served with rice, beans, avocado and house-made sauces.
The site also lists a kids’ menu, scratch-made cookies and drinks such as Mexican Coke and Topo Chico.
What’s next
Wood said the trailer should be ready for the owners to load their equipment this week, but he won’t have a firm opening date until an inspection is scheduled. The owners said they will post updates on Instagram and Facebook.
