A pizzeria near Buffalo has once again been named among the 50 best in the world.
Jay’s Artisan Pizzeria, in the Buffalo suburb of Kenmore, was No. 32 in 50 Top Pizza’s global rankings this month. It’s the fifth straight year that Jay’s, which offers Neapolitan and Detroit-style pies, has landed on the list. Last year, it was 14th.
“There’s a lot of appreciation that comes with this recognition,” a post on the restaurant’s Instagram page reads. “For a small business like ours, being part of this list means so much – and we never take the opportunity, the community, or the support for granted. Thank you.”

Jay’s owner Joe Powers is just 27 years old. His shop is famous not just for its pizza but for its lack of phone ordering. Customers have to place their orders online, with Top 50 noting that “the efficiency is impeccable” despite the unusual rule.
As for the pizza, 50 Top Pizza noted, “In the Neapolitan pizza, the dough is light, airy, well hydrated, with precise cooking and a fragrant crust; San Marzano tomatoes give the sauce a rich flavor. The Margherita, Pepperoni, and Four Cheese pizzas show balance and care.”

The world rankings featured shops from 36 countries. Italy led with 31 restaurants; the United States was next with 22, most of them in major cities. The four American shops in the top 10 were Una Pizza Napoletana in New York (second), Pizzeria Sei in Los Angeles (tied for fifth), Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco (tied for fifth) and Razza in Jersey City (10th).
The list was launched by Italian food writers in 2017. The rankings are based on reports from anonymous inspectors who consider the pizza, service, setting, wait times and beverage program.
London pizzeria Napoli on the Road topped the global rankings.
