Hydroxytyrosol is a naturally occurring phenolic compound found in olives and olive oil which has attracted significant scientific interest for its potent antioxidant properties and role in helping protect cells and lipids from oxidative stress. This has created opportunities for its formulation into products in the healthy aging, cardiovascular health, and cellular wellness categories.
“Hydroxytyrosol has a compelling story that connects decades of research around the Mediterranean diet with some of the biggest priorities shaping nutrition today, including healthy aging, cardiovascular health and cellular resilience,” said Matt Braman, VP of sales at Nova Mentis, an Irish biotechnology spin-out from University College Dublin. “With HT1, we’re taking that science forward through precision fermentation and giving product developers a new way to incorporate hydroxytyrosol into next-generation nutritional products.”
Mediterranean bioactive for modern formulations
Olive oil and whole olives are a key component of the Mediterranean diet, with a nutritional profile that includes fatty acids and polyphenols, with hydroxytyrosol recognized as one of its the most important bioactive components.
Unlike a general olive extract, which Nova Mentis says can contain a lot of unwanted impurities and batch to batch variations, HT1 provides developers with a consistent, high purity ingredient.
“Precision fermentation allows us to rethink how important nutritional compounds can be produced,” said Kevin O’ Connor, chief science officer at the firm. “Rather than being limited by traditional agricultural extraction, we can focus on delivering a defined highly pure bioactive with the consistency and scalability that today’s product developers require.”
Positioned for the burgeoning healthy aging market
The commercial introduction of HT1 represents the first step in Nova Mentis’ broader strategy to establish hydroxytyrosol as a versatile ingredient platform for nutritional innovation.
“We believe hydroxytyrosol has an opportunity to become much more prominent within the nutritional products industry,” said Braman. “HT1 brings together the heritage of the Mediterranean diet, the growing science around hydroxytyrosol and the capabilities of precision fermentation. That combination gives us an exciting platform for where nutrition is heading next.”
The launch comes as the nutrition industry increasingly shifts its attention from extending lifespan toward supporting healthspan—helping consumers maintain cardiovascular, cognitive, metabolic and cellular health.
The spin-out firm sees opportunities for HT1 across multiple health categories related to healthy aging.
Previous research has linked olive leaf extract to improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose metabolism, insulin sensitivity and more.
Research demonstrates that isolated hydroxytyrosol significantly reduces markers of oxidative stress, including oxidized LDL (oxLDL), protein carbonyls, and 8-OHdG (a key marker for DNA damage) while increasing total antioxidant capacity and protective enzyme activity such as glutathione peroxidase.
Additionally, evidence suggests hydroxytyrosol supports cellular health by combating “inflammaging” and reducing protein glycation. When combined with other botanical extracts in a multi-ingredient complex, it has reduced short telomere percentages and supported telomerase activity, suggesting it has therapeutic potential to protect against age-related degeneration.
Further, as a phenolic compound capable of crossing the blood–brain barrier, hydroxytyrosol acts directly on pathways involved in neurodegeneration. It helps protect against cognitive decline, both through direct cellular activity and indirectly via the “olive oil–gut–brain axis” by supporting gut microbiota health.
