Was heading to a friends for a few drinks so picked up on a whim.
I’m actually expecting a birthday bottle of the 2018 from a friend who’s in Lebanon and coming back to Edinburgh soon. So I was interested to have a sense of what to expect by trying this 2017 (I hadn't noticed the 2018 immediately next to it)
Where to begin…… welll, it’s a LOT. This wine in spite of being 9 years old, is incredibly fresh. Bright acidity, grippy tannins and huge amounts of bright fruit character. It almost tastes flavoured, the concentration and intensity is quite something.
On the nose, spices, fruits, oak. Yes some notes say things like prunes and blackberries etc, and while I’m sure you could read it that way, all I kept getting was orange zest and boozy raisins, it smelled like home made mince pies. Zesty, fruity, sharp, boozy and intense. Very rich.
That acidity carries into the palate, as do the strong but fairly smooth tannins. In reality, this wants another 5-10 years before all this stuff will settle down.
Very juicy, acidity, power, intensity are all very intoxicating, but not subtle. Clearly a very high quality wine, that has the promise to be better with time.
91 points right now, but in a few years, the possibility of more like 92-93 points, maybe more!

the ’18 is already this expressive? that’s wild, the mince pie note is spot on
Vinfanticide! 😉
Musar drinks well when young, better after 10y & better still after 20.
The difficulty is exercising restraint when it is so delicious!
