ASHLAND, Ky. (WSAZ) – An ice cream store in downtown Ashland has announced it will be permanently closing.
Whit’s Frozen Custard in Ashland made the announcement Sunday night.
In a Facebook post, the store said:
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the permanent closing of our Whit’s Frozen Custard location in downtown Ashland.
When we opened Whit’s, we believed in downtown Ashland and its future. We made a substantial investment in renovating a long-vacant storefront, bringing new life to an old building, and creating a place for families and friends to enjoy.
We weren’t just opening a business. We were investing in downtown Ashland.
Unfortunately, the Winchester Avenue roundabout project had a devastating impact on our business. Sales declined dramatically during construction and, even though the project was completed a couple of years ago, our business never recovered.
We held on, hoping things would improve. We explored reduced hours, weekend-only operations, and other ways to keep our doors open. But ultimately, operating costs continued to exceed sales, and the financial losses became too great.
This is heartbreaking for us. Not just because of the significant financial investment we have lost, but because of the hopes and dreams we had for this location.
We sincerely hope our experience serves as a reminder that decisions affecting downtown have real and lasting consequences for the small businesses that invest in their communities.
To our loyal customers, dedicated employees, and everyone who supported us, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We truly wish this story had a different ending.”
Whit’s Frozen Custard will still keep its Camp Landing Entertainment District location open.
