How do ya'll add safety bars/straps to your shelves? I would appreciate seeing or reading about your creative ways to protect your jars from slipping off the shelves. 🥰

I have a nice cupboard, and then a small wire shelf, without straps. Straps would be nice, but i trust us to not knock things off! Also most of said canned goods live in that little cupboard with a door.
I have heard something about it might be bungee cords? Some kind of stretchy thick cording you can attach to both sides of the rack.
Can I ask why the rings are on what looks to be lemon curd? Also, is it lemon curd, and if so, is it good? I have never tried it and am curious 🙂 (meaning never tried the NCFHP canned recipe for it)

I am grateful that I do not live anywhere near an area that has ever had so much as a tremble.
Having said that… with these shelves, the best stable solutions I have seen involve some kind of boxes for the jars and nylon straps around the vertical bars.
I also envy *so much envy I have* for your squat wide mouth half-pint jars. Ugh I love them so much. I’ll never forgive Ball for discontinuing them!

I have made the recipe for lemon curd you referred to and yes I liked it. It does have a shorter shelf life, like maybe 4 months which I feel the quality changes mote in a warm kitchen if that’s where storage is. This however is not lemon curd. It’s Ghee that I purchased in a large can in an specialty market and portioned out for easier storage, hence the rings. Great catch.
I think a long bungee is a good idea. My shelves are 36 inches long. Where my shelves are is a higher traffic area so I want to protect my investment.

In addition to adding bungee cords across the center of the opening, you can also turn the shelves upside down so there is a lip facing up on the shelf instead of overhanging down

I live in the Rockies, I keep all my jars in their boxes.

I bought a bungee cord cargo net designed to go over pickup truck beds… it works like a charm!
I think bungee cords would work well, with maybe 1 longer one to manage the 2 sides/back, with a separate shorter one for the front, so that you can easily unhook that one to move jars around / snag a jar.

Could you zip tie a yardstick to the front edge to give yourself a lip? They’re thin and strong, and won’t stretch out like a bungee cord. At 36” of shelf, it should be long enough or almost long enough to not be a concern. A regular ruler would probably be long enough for your sides.
If earthquakes/rattling is a concern, you could also run cardboard “tracks” in between all your rows, with another square loaded between each jar to keep each one individually separated. You’d essentially be recreating the boxes they come in with the added functionality of being able to grab one at a time without having to unload the whole box off the shelf.

For minor slippage, cut up yoga mat pieces on the shelves would probably work.

Rubber Bungee Straps, I think sometimes referred to as Tarp bungee cords, Walmart has them but so does Amazon! They are flat. They are very strong. Example picture from Preservation Haven on TikTok! Happy Canning 💜
