In 1978, Peter Lehmann took a leap of faith.

He’d been working as a winemaker and manager at a winery called Saltram in Australia’s Barossa Valley—a region known for its outstanding vineyards—when a significant grape surplus threatened the livelihoods of many local growers.

Lehmann had worked with many of these growers for nearly two decades, so he refused to turn his back on them even as many other wine companies were cancelling their agreements. Saltram’s owners agreed to allow Lehmann to launch a side project that would let him work with the growers and process their fruit onsite. Not long after, however, Saltram was sold, and the new owners halted the operation.

Instead of giving up, Lehmann raised enough money to buy the growers’ fruit in a handshake deal and process it into what became the first-ever vintage of Peter Lehmann Wines in 1980.

This story—one of boldness, perseverance and collaboration—is reflected in the new look from this iconic winery’s flagship wine, The Barossan Shiraz.

New Label, Same Smooth Sipping

Every bottle in The Barossan signature wine collection from Peter Lehmann Wines reflects the Barossa Valley and its 14 sub-regions—starting with quality fruit.

The Barossan Shiraz is known for its boldness. With rich flavours of plum and dark cherries, it is luscious from start to finish. The premium, quality wine reflects the namesake terroir, and so too does the label.

Peter Lehmann Wines

The 2024 Barossan Shiraz label shows all the different chapters in the story of both Peter Lehmann and the winery, reflecting deep relationships with the region’s finest grape-growers over generations.

The deep, evocative blue represents trust in oneself and one’s craft. The iconic club motif of Peter Lehmann Wines is symbolic of following one’s heart, taking a chance and embracing boldness, just as Lehmann did in 1978.

The new design also features artwork inspired by the winery’s creative past. Starting in the 1990s and reaching to the 2010s, Lehmann featured works by Australian artists on many of his wine labels, with each bottle showcasing a different piece of art. In December 2014, Casella Family Brands purchased Peter Lehmann Wines, and in 2015, the brand shifted away from this design approach to introduce a more standardized label. Now, the brand is paying homage to this prominent artistic history with a new look.

Rooted in Relationships

When Peter Lehmann Wines was founded, Lehmann and the Barossa community pulled together not just to make great wine but also to preserve the future of the land and the Barossa Valley.

Lehmann’s courage and his determination to preserve the Barossa back in 1978 is the reason why, to this very day, Peter Lehmann Wines has strong relationships with grape growers and unrivalled access to the Barossa’s best fruit.

This legacy doesn’t just live on through the wine and the brand, but also in the new generation of winemakers at Peter Lehmann Wines—craftspeople continuing to create a family of premium wines that speak of their origins.

The 2024 Barossan Shiraz celebrates this history of community, both in its new look and in a wine that stays true to its roots.
