There’s a new name joining Newcastle’s dining scene, and it comes from a hospitality team you’ll no doubt be familiar with.

Opening Saturday October 31 at 222 King Street, Frankie’s Tavern is the latest venue from the group behind Frenchie and Alfie’s Italian + Wine Bar, bringing a modern take on the traditional tavern to the heart of Newcastle.

The idea is simple: pairing familiar food, quality produce and a relaxed approach to hospitality creating a place that works just as well for a quick bite and a martini as it does for a long lunch, a business meeting or dinner that stretches well into the evening.

At the heart of Frankie’s is a menu built around favourites, with an emphasis on quality ingredients and careful execution rather than reinventing the wheel.

Expect everything from burgers, martinis and fresh seafood to raw dishes, handmade pasta, generous larger plates and premium cuts from the grill, with classic desserts rounding things out.

Leading the kitchen is Group Executive Chef Rafael Tonon, alongside Head Chef Nikhil Bhanot, with a focus on letting quality produce do the talking. Local ingredients will feature wherever possible, alongside produce from Tonon’s own garden.

“It’s about great produce, sourcing locally wherever possible and bringing in ingredients from my own garden. Proper technique, honest cooking and food people genuinely want to eat,” Tonon says.

While the menu is broad enough to suit different appetites and occasions, the idea behind Frankie’s extends beyond what’s on the plate.

The traditional tavern was a place to gather, exchange stories, conduct business and spend time together. Frankie’s draws on that history, aiming to create somewhere polished but relaxed, where good food and wine come without the formality of a special-occasion restaurant.

Sommelier and General Manager Ally McLean will lead the front-of-house experience alongside Venue Manager Tallinson De Mata, with the team focused on making guests feel welcome whether they’re dropping in for a drink or settling in for the night.

“Frankie’s is designed to feel like the kind of place that quickly becomes part of your routine,” McLean says.

“Some days that might mean a long lunch or a business meeting, other times a martini at the bar that turns into dinner. What matters is that it feels warm, confident and easy, somewhere you’re genuinely looked after, without the experience ever feeling overly formal.”
