Can a 7-year-old child make a difference? Sure, they do projects at their schools. But they can’t get a job or volunteer until they are in their teens. Though she is just in second grade, Lauren T. found a way to help others by making cookies. Lots of cookies.

It all began after Lauren made a presentation at school about National Cookie Day and decided to bake cookies to help others. She baked more than 200 cookies and packaged them in boxes. She then went door to door to hand them out. She gave them to friends, family, and neighbors and asked them to donate to No Kid Hungry, an organization that fights hunger in the United States. Soon all the cookies were gone, and Lauren had raised over $2,500!

She hopes her cookies will “inspire other kids to do fundraising for other kids.”

When she isn’t baking, Lauren goes to Mayfield Jr. School and plays tennis. She also likes to draw. She often goes to the library to check out baking books to show her mom. Together, they bake some of the recipes they find. Her favorite kind of cookie is Oatmeal Raisin.  If she did another fundraiser, she’d donate the proceeds to No Kids Hungry again because she believes they do important work.

Lauren wants other students to know that even if they don’t have as much power as adults do, small actions can add up, and “we’re never too small to make a big difference.”
