November 2, 2026 (London, UK) — London Wine Fair has announced a new flagship initiative for 2027 – “Spotlight Nation” – which will place a single country’s wines at the centre of the event. Portugal has been named as the inaugural Spotlight Nation, a decision that reflects both a centuries-old trading relationship and the country’s ambition to make the UK its number one export market by the end of the decade. With a remarkable breadth of styles, a wealth of unsung indigenous varieties, pioneering sustainability programmes, and a reputation for wines that over-deliver at every price point, buyers are increasingly looking to Portugal for points of difference, quality and value.

London Wine Fair anticipates welcoming over 50 Portuguese wine producers to the 2027 event as part of this initiative, which will bring together producers from across the country’s renowned – and off the beaten track – wine regions, providing a prominent platform to connect with key buyers, importers and industry professionals in the UK market.
The initiative has the support of ViniPortugal, the Interprofessional Association of the Portuguese Wine Industry. Commenting, Chairman of the ViniPortugal Board, Frederico Falcão, said: “Being named Spotlight Nation for 2027 is a wonderful recognition of how far Portuguese wine has come in the UK, and of how much further it can go. The UK is already one of our most important export markets, and our ambition is to make it our number one by 2030. Few countries can match Portugal’s wealth of native grapes, its distinctive regions and its genuine commitment to sustainability. This spotlight gives the whole UK trade, from fine wine merchants to multiple retailers and the on trade, the perfect reason to take a fresh look at Portugal.”
As Spotlight Nation, Portugal will have a dedicated area at the show, adjacent to Wines Unearthed, hosting regional bodies and an individual producer pavilion. Spotlight Nation exhibitors will have access to:
VIP Concierge Service
Dedicated social media campaign
Dedicated coverage in the London Wine Fair Times digital e-newsletters
Dedicated coverage in the London Wine Fair Times print edition, 10,000 copies
A Spotlight Nation Tasting Space and Theatre will feature a dedicated programme of masterclasses, small group tastings and seminars which will spotlight lesser-known indigenous grape varieties — offering trade buyers a rare opportunity to explore the country’s regional diversity in depth.
Commenting on the new initiative, Micaela Martins Ferreira, Portugal, Spain and South America Agent for London Wine Fair, said: “Portugal has an extraordinary story to tell, but what makes this initiative particularly exciting is the opportunity to translate that story into meaningful commercial connections. With its remarkable diversity of regions, indigenous grape varieties and producers, Portugal has so much more to offer the UK market than many buyers have yet discovered. Our ambition for Spotlight Nation is to go beyond showcasing Portuguese wines. We want to create a platform that brings producers, regional organisations and UK trade professionals together, encourages discovery and, most importantly, builds lasting business relationships. By combining Portugal’s heritage and authenticity with its innovation, sustainability and forward-thinking approach, we have a real opportunity to strengthen its position in one of the world’s most influential wine markets.”
Early sign-up, Luís Gouveia, Sales & Marketing Director at DFJ Vinhos, comments: “The fact that Portugal is the featured country at London Wine Fair 2027, one of the most important drinks industry events in the world, is concrete recognition of the value of the Portuguese wine industry. The price/quality/recognition ratio, so important for professionals and consumers, is a crucial selling point for Portugal; producers seek innovation, they seek to offer everyone, with consistency and balance, pleasure, control of the alongside quality and sustainability.”

The Spotlight Nation initiative has already received significant support from key buyers:
“Portuguese wines have been an important part of Loki’s range for a number of years, and I’m confident they will continue to go from strength to strength. When it comes to value for money, I believe they outperform other countries in every category. There’s real excitement among consumers, extending beyond the Douro, which first piqued their interest. Reds from regions such as Alentejo and Dão, alongside white wines from Vinho Verde, showcase Portugal’s diversity, broad appeal and quality. We already have an extensive Portuguese range at Loki, and we intend to keep building on it.” — Phil Innes, LOKI wines
“It’s great to see Portugal chosen as the first Spotlight Nation. Portugal has a special place in The Wine Society’s history – the very first wine we sold, back in 1874, was Portuguese! Today, it’s one of our fastest-growing regions, with more and more members discovering the quality, diversity and exceptional value that Portuguese wines have to offer.” — Pierre Mansour, The Wine Society
The 2026 Host Nation focus was Great Britain and given its success – which saw a record number of 80 producers participate; a five-fold increase on 2025 – it was agreed to retain this feature and create the new Spotlight Nation, which will change annually.
London Wine Fair 2027 will take place from 17th to 19th May at Olympia.
