Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • Salt to taste
  • Spice (half a teaspoon of mace optional)
  • A small piece of butter (1 teaspoon)
  • Flour enough to make a stiff batter (whole-wheat flour)

    Approximately 2 dozen balls

    Preparation

    1. Mix together until solid dough, then drop by teaspoonful into hot lard.
    • The lard gives a pronounced flavor. Modern cooks would more happily use Crisco or corn oil.
