Think growing vegetables is hard work? Pam & Paul built an easy vegetable garden with raised beds on their farm in upstate South Carolina. Pam shows you how we built and planted our vegetables plus gives you some tips on growing organic vegetables without a lot of time and fuss.

Pam Stone, Sharon Decker and Ramona Holloway host the radio program “The Satisfied Life” out of Charlottle, NC. www.thesatisfiedlifenetwork.com. Paul Zimmerman is Pam’s other half and owns Ashdown Roses. www.ashdownroses.com.

  1. I love your fence and arbor. I am planning on making one in the spring and wasn't sure about the height. I like the look of yours. Thanks.

  2. Check out backtoedenfilm com and see what Paul Gautschi is doing by growing in permanent mulch, or search utube for back to eden gardening and you'll find it.

  3. With a raised bed, a 4' width is ideal. Same if planting directly in the ground, with paths, to easily reach to the center from either side, to plant & weed.Google veggies / herbs for shade. In the vid she mentions underplanting with cucumbers. This is a good way to optimally utilize space.Tall plants shade the lower ones. The lower ones reduce weed growth, & keep the soil cooler & roots moist. Living mulch, like straw mulch, etc. retains moisture longer. Less evaporation to sun = more for plants.

  4. Like the orderliness, ease of weeding & water conservation with raised beds. That rose covered arbor is gorgeous & the outdoor shower is a dream come true. There are solar heated showers to with a container of water overhead – enough for a warm shower, plus the warm water from the hose, or shade the hose & have 2 faucets to cool the solar heated water. Good tip on hose type rated "safe for drinking" & others having lead!!! I never knew that, & rather water edibles with that type of hose too!

  5. With clay (or any soil), gypsum aerates, creating a more workable soil, so rain can penetrate, & is a natural fertilizer. Adding 3" to 4" or 5" composted, aged manure annually on top, improves the tilth of the soil while providing a constant source of nutrients. Rain & worms help work it all deeper, so helps retain more water, feeds worms & microorganisms which further aerate & fertilize. MIneralizing the soil with greensand or rock dust adds more nutrients & improves flavor of produce.

  6. there's a book called "square foot gardening" by mel bartholomew. it's all in there. (though i disagree with his 6" max depth) once you get started, experience will guide and teach ya.
i'd offer to send you a copy but mine still hasn't been returned. you could probably pick up a used copy on amazon for a couple bucks.

  7. Careful, Pammy, those pressure treated 2 x's are usually treated with arsenic, which can leach out, and be absorbed by your plants. Has your hair been falling out, or feeling listless lately ?? Check it out for yourself.Better to use cedar..

  8. black locust is another wood with properties like cedar

but SuperChessnuts, what about heat-treated wood, HT?

  9. How much sun do vegetable plants require? The spot that I have chosen gets the late morning sun like around 10:30. Is that ok?

  10. Depends on the plant, check Google on the plants you want to plant. Some plants grow in late sun, but never truly thrive. Some won't flower or produce fruit, some will. Try growing a little of everything you want, its your garden. Micro climates make a differance too. Shelter, shade, temp, wind, water, etc..

  11. I remember a Better Boy plant produced 342 pounds of tomatoes. The cultivar was a trend in the 1960's. Just as Better Boy "replaced" Best Boy there seemingly is now "Big Beef" and "Steak Sandwich" and perhaps others as new trend setters.

I have a couple of "Steak Sandwich" currently growing the tallest. I also bought and in growing order of height of the remaining seedlings from Burpee are: "Power Pops", "Fourth Of July", "Sweet Tangerine","Sungold", "Cherries Jubilee".

  12. Ispolin was sold out. But I think I bought Ispolin under a different name. Ispolin grows like small trees!

I'm excited with the tomato seeds I bought this year! The ones I already mentioned from Burpee! But also the four cultivar wild tomatoes. "Cuatomate", "Wild Cherry"(From Salt Spring Seeds)(This is different from "Matt's Wild Cherry" which I purchased else where) and "Coyote".

"Coyote" seeds haven't sprouted yet I guess. Sometimes tomato seeds take
    16 days to germinate.

  13. And finally I would like to mention why I bought those four wild tomato cultivars "Cuatomate", "Wild Cherry"(not like Matt's from Salt Spring Seeds), "Matt's Wild Cherry" and "Coyote".

A person can plant them without poles, can repopulate as "volunteers", possibly no maintance and I suppose they can grow in the total shade if part of the plant get moderate sun. A person said, "Even in the Dominican Republic Matt's Wild Cherry grows without watering".

    Bare ground planting from seed!

  14. Good to know! Thanks. Had heard they changed the formulation a bit in recent years, mayybe for human safety, but never looked into it.

  15. Thank You! Maybe I'll manage a tomato farm next year!

I have the Salt Spring Island Seeds' "Wild Cherry" growing but the soil is seemingly too hard. I have put Burpee's "Cherry Jubilee" into an upside-down planter.

  16. a great natural to combat bugs like afids is ti release lady bugs into your garden, they eat the afids but not the plants

  17. luv…luv the shower… been day dreaming of making one. Thanks for the raised beds  idea.

  18. You said you used pressure treated lumber. Please do research, it is toxic and has to be at a minimum of 25 feet from food crops.
