  1. Feels a bit hard to accept for me because in my culture, barley is generally eaten as a dessert with something sweet, and mushrooms are savoury. To mix the two….

    but as the saying goes, never try never know. 

  2. Will definitely be making this! I love how you mix healthier recipes in here without having to advertise it that way. I love the Eat Clean segments too (and have made quite a few of Shira's recipes!) but this is a nice reminder that even if it's not raw/vegan/kale, you can still nourish your body with good ingredients.   4. I LOVE how you're so eeked-out by mushroom squeaking!! You asked why, I'm sure you know, but in case you actually don't–it's just water in the shrooms becoming steam and squealing out of the mushrooms. Like a log on a fire crackling.

  7. Mmmmm! Will make but butter or oil of ANY kind is not necessary to saute anything! Water does just as well and is MUCH better for the ❤!!! A little Tamari and certainly veggie stock!

  8. You can precook barley while you are cutting the ingredients, than add half-cooked barley to the soup. Carrots, celery, parsley, and potatoes will make it traditional eastern European

  9. 😇Cook oil, onion, garlic, thyme, salt, pepper, mushrooms. Add chicken broth and pearl barley. Serve with pastrami or corn beef sandwich.

  10. Ok I’m the geek that is going to answer your question. The squeaking sound is steam escaping from under the mushroom slice.
