Learn how to make traditional Greek dolmades by watching this video. They are easy to make, they just take time with the rolling process. It definitely will be rewarding in the end!

You shall require the following:

Jar of Grape Vine Leaves
Reject leaves to line the pot (later in the process)
1/2 Cup Yellow Onion
2 Green Onions
4 Garlic Cloves
1 Cup White Rice ( I used long grain)
2 Cups Water
2 TBSP Fresh Mint
2 TBSP Fresh Dill
2 TBSP Fresh Parsley
1 TBSP Fresh Oregano
2 TBSP Lemon Juice + an additional 3 TBSP or a little more (from an actual lemon)
1 TBSP Lemon Zest
Lemon for the slices
1 TSP Greektown Spice Blend by The Spice Trader (garlic powder, basil, oregano, cinnamon, parsley, rosemary, dill weed, marjoram, thyme, & nutmeg)
Salt & Pepper
Olive Oil
Water to cover vine leaves
Plate to weigh down the rolled vine leaves

This will make about 30-40 vine leaves. You can always make the amount you want and use any left over rice for other meals.

Notes/Thoughts:

If you are using fresh vine leaves by chance you will have to blanch them. It is unlikely that I have such ambitious people watching, but you never know! It’s currently winter when I’m sharing this, so any ambitious folks willing to use fresh leaves would be in warmer climates, unless you have a super fancy greenhouse. In that case, please invite me over to check it out!

Rinse the brine off of the leaves very thoroughly. Some brines are very salty. Separate the leaves when you do this. You will want to dry them off afterwards.

Olive oil and lemon are staples in Greek cooking so don’t be surprised about the amount used here.

If you are going to make these for a party feel free to increase the recipe – they make for excellent appetizers! I quite enjoyed them as a part of a combo plate too!

I’m always interested to hear your own personal experiences. Feel free to share in the comments below. I welcome your questions as well. Thank-you for subscribing, liking, sharing, and tuning in every Monday.

  1. My favourite Greek food ever (except for olives, cheese and Xoriatiki) Eat them like candy. After they are cooked you add lots more lemon and take a shot of Ouzo to celebrate them.
