For a large batch of challah that will freeze beautifully!( yields about 7 -9 large challah )

2.5 kg or 5.5 lbs of bread flour ( if you do not use bread challh, the results will not be as good: it will give you a very dense challah)
50g or 1/4 cup salt
50g /or 1/4 cup sugar ( you can easily double the amount to have a sweet challah )
1 1/2 cups or 375ml of neutral oil
6 eggs for the challh recipe
2-3 eggs to do challah egg-wash depending if you use the egg yolk alone or do my go to egg-wash: 1 full egg, 1 tsp salt, 2tbsp water mix and you have the perfect egg-wash!)
1-2 cups ( 250-500ml) warm water

Topping: your choice!!

for the yeast cake
15g / 1 heaping spoon of sugar of sugar
30g or 3tbsp yeast
2 cups of warm water

TIP FOR BAKING:
use the convect mode on your oven
if you do not have the convect mode on your oven rotate your trays in the oven after 20 minutes of baking ( NOT BEFORE!!!) otherwise the challah will collapse 🙁

for 2 medium challot
Flour: 500g or 3cups+ 2 TBSP ( if you dunk your cup in the flour) but 4 cups and 1tbsp of you spoon and level to measure your cups of flour
While measuring your flour
SALT: 10g /2 rounded tsp
SUGAR: 10 g or 2 rounded tsp
OIL ( I like using sunflower oil) 80g or 1/3 cup
Warm water: 95g or 6 tbsp
Eggs: 2

To proof the yeast
95g warm water/ 6 tbsp
8g of yeast 2 rounded tsp
4 g of sugar / 1tsp

  2. Watched a video on how water molecules realign into more beautiful shapes after praying over the water. I pray over my water, before filling my coffee pot, drinking a glass, etc. I will add more prayers to my cooking as you do as it is beautiful & worshipful🙏

  3. I love good, homemade bread in general, but have never tasted or made challah. What you made looks sooo yummy, especially with the sesame seeds. They give any bread a lovely nutty flavor that, paired with butter and/or honey or jam, is heavenly!

But what clearly makes any food more heavenly are any prayers or blessings said while preparing the food. Otherwise, I feel like I'm just eating from a pure survival mode, physically, and not with true intention to nourish myself physically or spiritually. I've noticed this lack of intention comes from stressful situations or emotions. At least that's what I've observed within myself lately, and I've made it a personal goal to be more mindful of what I'm doing, or saying.

Watching this video gave me so much peace, inspiration and encouragement to keep on with this goal. I don't have a lot of extra counter space to make something like challah bread, but I can at least approach improving my other cooking and baking efforts with the extra mindfulness and peace I seek to cultivate overall…because it's the very opposite of what I was surrounded with before I moved into my own place. 😅 Thank you, Sara, for bringing this peaceful mindfulness to all who need it. 🙏🙏

  4. I have just ordered myself a food mixer to make Challah. I have always done it by hand, but I am struggling with arthritis. I enjoy making Challah and find it relaxing. I've never got on with the 6 braided Challah, but it all made sense when you started to sing. I also liked the tip on adding water and salt to the egg wash. I love learning from your channel. Thank you for sharing.

  5. Dr. How I thank G_d for bumping into your videos. I LOVE them All. I am trying to search my genealogy. In my background there is a resembles. Unfortunately I don't have the money for the proper search. Again I love your videos and it has brought me closer to G_d. May he continue to bless you in every direction, to you and family.

  6. Sara Malka – I started making your challah recipe a year ago and it always comes out fluffy and delicious — I've said goodbye to dense challah forever. Wishing you. and your family a gmar chatima tova. I love challah!

  7. How delicious this looks. Loved watching the braiding process. I love challah

  8. Hi Sara, I have enjoyed watching you as a new audience. I have been trying to make challah and am not yet happy with the way it comes out. My dough will appear fine but the finished product does not meet expectations as it is a bit dry. My favorite is the pulley, type. I am a baker and want to arrive at the most delicious challah. Do you have any tips? I enjoy all the history you have provided as it helps me hold on to my background.

  9. I love challah and I love this recipe! Can you simply use a 5 lb bag for your recipe, or it needs to be 5.5 lbs?

  10. Dr. Sara, I have to prepare about 8 Challahs for a big get-together. How long can I freeze Challah for & still have be fluffy, and taste as good as if it just came out of the oven?

  11. Your video is wonderful. I’m learning to make a similar Ukrainian Christmas bread called Kolach. I’ve learned so much about this from watching Challah videos. Given the similarities in the recipes and appearance of both breads I assume that the origin of the bread came from Jewish tradition first. Thank you for this beautiful and informative video.

  12. This video demonstrates why I don't make my own challah and probably never will.
