Asia started off with a single garden bed in her backyard, and over the last three years, she has transformed it into a thriving urban homestead that produces loads of fruit, vegetables, eggs, meat, herbs, and more! She’s also got backyard chickens and quail, a greenhouse, a 2-bin compost system, and rainwater collection.

Asia is growing an abundance of fresh food year-round for herself and her two kids, and she dries, freezes, and preserves a lot of her harvest as well. Some of what she’s growing includes blueberries, peaches, asparagus, squash, tomatoes, beans, zucchini, cucumbers, peppers, cantaloupe, onions, watermelon, medicinal plants, herbs like basil, and so much more!

She grows in a mix of raised beds (built with free cinder blocks she snagged online), no dig beds (with compost and free cardboard), in the ground, in bags, and on trellises.

We hope you enjoyed seeing this backyard transformation from a grass lawn to a productive homestead and the abundance of food Asia is growing. Definitely check out her channel to follow along: https://www.youtube.com/@YellowDoorUrbanHomestead

  1. I love that you utilize your space for fruits and vegetables and eat them, you’re a wonderful example for all the people in cities how they can make the land to eat healthfully

Please don’t exploit or murder the animals, though, they want to live free and liberated

Be vegan for the animals, earth and yourself

  3. We've been off grid for 10 years and many many people have asked me how to make that leap. And I always tell them start where you are with what you have. And you'll be amazed what you can do right there. She is doing this.

  6. This is such a wonderful example of everyone who watches this channel and thought "god I wanna do this but I can't." She openly goes "i just saw some videos read some things, it took a while and here we are" very motivating.

  7. The cattle panel trellis is a game changer. I have 2 cattle panel and one hog panel (it’s not as wide). I use them for pumpkins and grapes. I purchased and cut up a cattle panel and am using it for cucumbers, smaller squash and tomatoes instead of tomato cages or nets. I have 3×4’ raised beds so I don’t want caged taking up space. Taking advantage of chain link fencing that already existed in my yard has helped. You have a beautiful garden! I’ll definitely take some ideas from this. I have bags but don’t use them much. I like whiskey barrels for berries like blueberries, raspberries and blackberry. I’m adding strawberries next year. I had success with potatoes in the barrels as well and will be getting two for potatoes. Compost has been a money saver for me. I have a wire bin and a tumbler. The bin didn’t turn the compost fast enough and I needed more space. I just got a rain barrel this year and I love it. My husband and son built me a greenhouse and I’ll be using it to grow over the winter. Mine is a wood frame with plastic panels. I saw a bigger turnover after adding a pollinator bed. Ponds keep the birds happy and away from my food. I don’t spray for anything and I don’t deter wild life with anything other than offer them their own food.

  8. I just want to give you 1000 likes! Beautiful garden, and you look so relaxed and in harmony! Thank you!

  9. "Make it make" is a great canning channel. I'm going to have to use containers because we have garbage cans in the back which would be close to my garden.

  10. You are a fantastic example that I too can plant in a urban setting. I rent so I have to use grow bags and containers. Thank you 💜

  11. Amazing story!!!! This is what needs to happen in many urban neighborhoods without much access to grocery stores
